National Curriculum- Art and Design
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Art & Design at our School
At Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School, elements of the Art and Design curriculum are taught to all children from Nursery to Year 6. We have tailored our Art and Design Curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of all of our children.
We want to develop in children an enjoyment of Art and an excitement about being creative. They are provided with a wide variety of experiences, which allow them to develop, build on and extend on their skills. We believe that a high-quality Art education should develop creativity, engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Children are introduced to a range of art work and develop knowledge of the styles and techniques used by a variety of artists. As pupils progress, they will develop a vocabulary to enable them to evaluate the work of artists, but also of their own and that of their peers.
Our Art & Design Statement of Intent can be found at the bottom of this page.
Year 2 Work inspired by Picasso
Our Art curriculum offers children frequent opportunities to develop their practical skills using a wide range of media at their own pace. We know that progression is not linear so all work is valued and recorded and not marked. However, to encourage children’s progress and creativity, we observe children while they work and capture moments where they evaluate effectively, use the language of art and design, collaborate well and make creative decisions.
Art lessons are linked to the half termly themes where possible and in discreet units of work depending on the whole school focus. Our progression map follows the national curriculum objectives to ensure children build on prior knowledge.
Our whole school topic overview can be found here
Our Art & Design progression maps can be found here:
Nursery Reception Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6
In each unit of work the children draw and create using a range of media, whilst exploring the work of an artist, crafts person, or designer. We expect final pieces to all be different as they will reflect each individual’s learning journey. Children are encouraged to move their learning forward by reflecting on their own work. Self-evaluation is taught throughout each unit and is supported by peer and teacher led critiques.
Lessons are planned for children to revisit and build on skills linked to line, tone, pattern, space, form, colour, texture and shape. We remind children of their learning so far and address any misconceptions.
By revisiting different mediums and techniques throughout their school life, children will have the skills and confidence to express themselves and produce work they enjoy making and can be proud of.

Statement of Intent: Art and Design will be fostered through these 4 principles
1. To unlock children’s true potential
We aim to develop confident, resilient, inquisitive, independent & knowledgeable children through the delivery of a coherent & structured Enquiry Based curriculum which builds on prior learning. Individuals are challenged to reach their true potential and be ready for the next stage in their education. In Art and Design we will do this through:
- Creating an art curriculum that is progressive and builds on previous learning and ensures coverage of National Curriculum requirements
- Providing a curriculum to meet the needs of all pupils (including SEND) to achieve age related expectations
- Promoting a love of and appreciation of a range of artistic styles and artists
- Teach art in a thematic and enjoyable way, alongside other areas of the curriculum
- Allow children to experiment with artistic techniques and materials
- Provide opportunities for whole school and class enrichment
- Ensuring a subject leader monitors the teaching of Art and Design ensuring a consistent approach and identifies any gaps

2. For children to flourish as unique and well-rounded individuals
We aim to foster happy and healthy children within a safe environment that are given the help they need to learn, grow and achieve as much as they possibly can in an atmosphere which nourishes a healthy mind and body. In Art and Design we will do this through:
- Providing opportunities for whole school experiences such as workshops and other events
- Using art as a way to support mental wellbeing
- Using art as a tool for self-expression and celebration of their own uniqueness
- Providing opportunities to talk about art and voice their own opinions (pupil voice)
- Showcasing examples of great work and celebrating the children’s achievements through use of displays and newsletters
- Developing enjoyment in learning new skills in different art media- such as textiles, printing, clay etc.
3. For children to develop their skills as life-long learners
We aim to provide a broad, balanced curriculum with a wide variety of experiences which nurture the talents of our children to become creative, enquiring learners and effective communicators who aspire
In Art and Design we will do this through:
- Providing Long Term Plans which ensure the children study a range of different artists through school
- Giving children opportunities to compare different artists as their knowledge broadens the further they move up in school
- Providing a whole school plan to ensure skills are built on and developed as the children move through the school
- Encouraging use of discussion and pupil voice to talk about what they like/don’t like
- Providing a language rich curriculum to give the children the words to communicate how they feel about a piece of work
- Encourage self-evaluation of their own work
- Providing a broad range of art and design to encourage children developing their own style

4. For children to widen their horizons and develop as responsible local and Global citizens
‘We aim to help our children appreciate their role as part of our community. To ask questions, make informed choices and to take responsibility for the decisions they make. As a result fostering an awareness of the difference they can make as local & global citizens.
In Art and Design we will do this through:
- Learning about different artists and design around the world and the influences they have had
- Learning about different cultures and times through art and design (links to Geography and History themes)
- Local opportunities eg local artist (The Greenway project) Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape Partnership
- Local art competitions and events
- Visits to local art galleries eg 20 21 in Scunthorpe
